Don't ask me why I'm motherf***ing stressed. Damn, what happened to the summertime cookouts? Every time I turn around, a n**** getting took out. It make me want to grab the 9 and the shotty, but I got to go identify the body. Six months later, all the dead bodies showing up. Kids younger than me - they got the Skygrand pagers. And now this s***'s getting crazier and major. S***, it's hard being young from the slums, eating 5 cent gums, not knowing where your meal's coming from. Either you're slinging crack rock or you got a wicked jump shot. THE NOTORIOUS BIG: (Rapping) If I wasn't in the rap game, I'd probably have a key knee-deep in the crack game. (SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "THINGS DONE CHANGED") And then there is the first song, "Things Done Changed." It picks up, and the character, Notorious B.I.G., gets out of jail, returns home and is reminded of this violent misery and racist contempt of the crack era. Growing up with so much potential, then getting caught up, then going to jail - that's the interlude. So the first song on this debut album of Biggie's "Ready To Die" - it starts first off with Biggie being born. MOSLEY: Let's explore a little bit more what you mean by that. Like, it's so bad out here that we're telling anybody who'll listen, that, like, I am ready to die to escape the circumstances that I've been given. And when you're listening to the album, like, these are the things we're trying to survive. Like, this is - these are the things you're trying to curb. This is what paranoia looks like - that you can't find in the actual verbiage of the '94 crime bill. But I'm going to give you the perspective of being an inner city kid. Basically saying, like, OK, we understand how Washington and Congress and, you know, so many other levels of government view these inner city kids. So when you take the '94 crime bill and you understand the discussion and the discourse that went around that bill and listen to the album again, to me it sounds like a rebuttal to that actual crime bill. Like, that is - that's a form of serendipity that I wasn't expecting to encounter, you know, during my research process. TINSLEY: Let me tell you, Tonya, when I first found out that both of those things happened on the same day, I was like, wow. When you put those two dates together and relistened to that album with that knowledge in mind, what did you hear? That's "Ready To Die." That was the same day as the '94 crime bill was passed. So the first album came out on September 13, 1994. You know, taking a look at the cultural and political forces at play during Biggie's life is such an interesting way to explore his impact. JUSTIN TINSLEY: Thank you so much for having me, Tonya. Justin Tinsley is a senior sports and culture reporter for ESPN's Andscape. He's the author of the book "It Was All A Dream: Biggie And The World That Made Him." In the book, Tinsley explores Biggie's life in the context of not only rap, but the wider cultural and political forces that shaped him, including immigration, Reagan-era politics, the war on drugs and mass incarceration. Joining us today to talk about the life and legacy of the Notorious B.I.G. Biggie was murdered 16 days before the release of his second album, "Life After Death." Biggie recorded it when he was just 22 years old, and it was his only album released during his lifetime. Rolling Stone recently named it the greatest hip-hop album of all time. MOSLEY: Wallace's album "Ready To Die" was an instant hit when it came out in 1994. Salt-n-Pepa and Heavy D up in the limousine. THE NOTORIOUS BIG: (Rapping) It was all a dream. As any hip-hop fan will tell you, we can't talk about the genre without including one of rap music's pioneers, the late Christopher Wallace, better known as Biggie Smalls. And this month we've been commemorating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.

It also includes adaptive transparency mode, which lets you hear the world around you when you have your earbuds in, while also automatically reducing loud sounds such as sirens. That includes active noise cancellation, which roughly doubles the noise cancellation of the first-gen AirPods Pro and works impressively in loud environments like airplanes and city streets. The AirPods Pro 2 were the first to get Apple's latest H2 chip for improved sound. Comparatively, the standard AirPods have hard plastic tips like the traditional Apple EarPods that used to come in the box with most iPhones - which many people found fell out of their ears easily, or weren't very comfortable to wear. The AirPods Pro 2 use silicon tips to fit into your ears (with four sizes to choose from), similar to the ones you're probably familiar with in most of the earbuds you've used. Plus, they get a bonus set of new features as part of the iOS 17 update, which won't come to any of the other AirPods. That's because they fit almost every type of ear, they are very comfortable to wear, and they include all of the best and latest features that Apple has to offer in headphones. And then the length, the fact that we could say it's supersized – we were worried about fans were getting really irritated at the length between seasons. In my case, they couldn't press it because they knew that legally they'd lose, so better to cut their $20-30 loss and focus on the next person to scare.īottom line, never let a collection agency scare you into doing anything. Apparently with these transactions they can't really do anything to you anyways.there are two ways companies go about collecting money.this way and the old-fashioned way of a corporation handing a case off to a collection agency in the event of a real-time delinquency. That was three years ago and I haven't heard anything from them again and nothing ever appeared on my credit record. I got a lot of angry language about them ruining my credit if I didn't pay, but I simply ended the conversation. I called them back and stated I had talked to AT&T, and that I had been a customer of both Cingular and AT&T for many years and they had NO record of me ever being late.furthermore, if I was still an AT&T customer, you'd think they would have records of that, but they didn't. The theory is these collection companies figure they can scare enough people to actually make a profit, and I'll tell you that they were very rude, deliberate and pushy, even when I was trying to work with them. Some of the debts were actual debts, others were mis-matched balance sheets. I supposedly owed $200, and this company likely paid a few dozen bucks for the debt, and the permission to "recover" what they could. Unfortunately, when Cingular was absorbed into AT&T, rather than going through the expense of auditing the erroneous accounts, they simply sold off the "overdue" accounts to any companies that wanted to buy the debt, for pennies on the dollar. Had the company not merged, they would have annually gone through each system and audited them to make them match. Many of these are just accounting errors since most large corporations have two or more systems that keep track of the various charges. I called AT&T back and they stated that my old Cingular account number would have probably been changed, but they didn't indicate I had any late balances.Īfter making more calls, I found out that when companies the size of Cingular and AT&T merge, they often have un-accounted for balances. In 2006, Cingular had been bought out by AT&T. The only AT&T-related company I could come up with was Cingular, with whom I had my cell phone with. I did more research and discovered that I had GTE and Sprint as landline carriers in 2002 (I lived in Alabama). They ran my SSN and transfered me to each of their business units that I had accounts with over the years, and no one knew where this debt came from. I called AT&T, and the number I had been given didn't match any of their numbers. I checked my credit too, and didn't notice anything stating that AT&T had written off anything. So I asked them for the amount I owed, the account number they had and any other particulars (including what division of AT&T this was coming from). 9 times out of 10, they are simply out to scare you into paying something.Ĭase in point, a few years ago I got a call from a collection agency saying I owed a couple hundred bucks for an AT&T bill dating back to 2002. Don't pay them anything until you do your research. If you're contacted by one and you think you don't owe anything, ask for the details on the alleged account information, then hang up. As the first and is the most common mechanism for proving transactions, proof of work is used by many popular cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. So every time a full node receives a new block from another peer, It does validate all transactions in the block and adds to its blockchain and updates a list of UTXOs only if the block is fully valid. Remember that cryptocurrencies that operate on the blockchain use different verification systems with their own unique structures. Transaction information is public and can be found on the digital ledger known as the blockchain. Betty Boop doesn't speak in her debut cartoon. Kane, who also had short, curly black hair and huge eyes, had a gentle, feminine, high-pitched singing voice, which Margie Hines emulated when she lent her voice to Betty Boop in Dizzy Dishes. Kane was a popular singer in the 1920s whose signature song was "I Wanna Be Loved By You," in which she scat-sings non-words like "boop-boop-da-doo" and eventually earned the moniker "The Boop-Boop-A-Doop Girl." "One morning, Dave came over to my desk, handed me the music to the song 'Boop-Boop-A-Doop' by Helen Kane and asked me to design a girl character to go with it," Fleischer studios animator Grim Natwick told the Los Angeles Times in 1990. Though it was easy to draw comparisons between Betty Boop and Bow, the character was more directly inspired by another Roaring '20s performer. A-8 of the Hollywood on Parade series of short films that debuted in 1933, Bow's real-life husband, Rex Bell, tells Eddie Borden to stop hitting on a wax figure of his wife and say hello to a real-life version of Betty Boop played by Bonnie Poe, who also provided the voice for the character in film and on the radio between 19. Her short hair, short skirts and bubbly attitude helped keep the carefree decadence of the previous decade alive as the United States was in the midst of the Great Depression.Īs such, it has long been said that Clara Bow, one of the first Hollywood "It" Girls who embodied the spirit of the 1920s and the flapper lifestyle on the silver screen, inspired the character of Betty Boop. That could be because Betty Boop was really a product of the Roaring '20s. However, Betty Boop still resembled a woman, which was unique at a time when the majority of animated characters were based on animals. As such, she was made to sort of look like a canine with floppy ears and jowls. In a sense, figuring out who exactly is the real Betty Boop is a more complicated task than these early lighthearted animated shorts would suggest.īetty Boop was originally meant to be a love interest for the popular Fleischer Studios animated dog Bimbo. In fact, Betty Boop's identity has been connected to a few different women in show business in the 1920s. Fleischer Studios drew upon real-life inspiration when it created the character of Betty Boop in 1930. There's no doubt that Betty Boop has become an icon in her own right over the years, but she wasn't necessarily the originator of the qualities that made her famous. That's probably thanks in part to the sheer licensing power of the character, appearing on everything today, from clothing to car mats to cell phone cases to my personal favorite, a book titled " How to be a Betty: The Ultimate Guide to Unleashing Your Inner Boop!" The character has also occasionally popped up onscreen in recent years, making a cameo in 1988's Who Framed Roger Rabbit and having a new animated feature in development with Simon Cowell's Syco Entertainment and Animal Logic. 9, 1930 as part of Fleischer Studios' Talkartoons series. Betty Boop is still recognizable 85 years after her debut in the Dizzy Dishes cartoon that premiered on Aug. That curly black hair, those big green eyes, that little red dress. |
